Letters cut with a potter’s knife

Kiln & Kin is a two-generation ceramics workshop outside Utrecht. They needed packaging that could be printed by a local shop on recycled board, and a wordmark that felt handmade without pretending to be a signature.

I cut the letterforms from paper with the same knife they use to trim clay, scanned them, and tidied just enough to keep them printable. The result is a display face with eleven glyphs and no lowercase, which is all a box needs.

The specimen

To launch the face we printed a sixteen-page specimen on the offcuts from the first packaging run. It is given away with every order over fifty euros and has become their most requested object.

The family now uses the knife-cut letters on their kiln door, which is the kind of adoption you cannot brief for.
